The first thing what I noticed around 9 years ago when I came over from Germany to the U.S., were the typical small town main roads and the immense accumulation of gas stations, lined up almost like the first graders from my sons’ elementary class, when standing in front of the school kitchen and getting ready for lunch. Even so this picture is imprinted in my mind, we all might have to rethink how we experienced and have known America’s gasoline pump stations street-scape. Reason here for is the unstoppable progress of the automotive industry to develop the ultimate EV – a.k.a. the Electric Vehicle.
BMW is speaking of its upcoming City Car, Nissan launching its Leaf this month, Chevy getting ready for its Volt deliveries and then there is Audi, who showed a few months back their EV vision with the Audi e-tron line-up, as seen here in the Audi e-tron spyder version. Now, let’s picture an ordinary day of a typical working American, commuting with her EV daily to the office downtown. 6.00PM – coming home required next action for the vehicle owner; recharge the batteries during the night hours via regular power outlets installed in the garage, so the car will be ready in the morning to get her back to work. According to industry data for approximate reach when fully charged is around 200 to 300 miles, So City trips are more than feasible and I believe won’t give you an anxiety attack of fear getting stranded in the not so nice area of the town, especially thinking about some dark corners in Atlanta, GA. No offense please.
But – what are Americans doing when they are getting ready for the cross-country trip a la Clark Griswold visiting Walley World? Audi’s thinkers, engineers, designers and visionaries got together and came up with a solution, which will make the Clark Griswold’s of the 21st century happy.
The answer: The e-den – a futuristic vision of a e-Fuel station not only to re-charge the vehicles but also its travelers. During Florida’s trade show event – Design Miami 2010, Audi presented an impressive architecture reminiscent to an American Gasoline Station out of the 1950’s. Addressing in particular one major concern – the waiting time to get your car fully charged, opened up the idea to make these future Re-charge Stations as much comfortable as possible for the people, waiting their car being fully charged. I am predicting that in these kind of Motel-similar buildings enough amenities will find its place such as huge play areas for kids (which we already see on Germanys’ Autobahn Rest Stations), Internet cafe and even movie theaters. (Let’s face it – you won’t be able to recharge an EV in 3 minutes, like we are used to when filling up our current gas guzzlers or the fuel-efficient Audi TDI engines.)
How serious is Audi with this design study? I believe pretty S E R I O U S, when looking at the following picture!
As you may know, Audi is pushing full steam ahead with their approach and development to get these electric vehicles onto the roads. In less than one year Audi presented already four electric concepts within its Audi e-tron family and do not forget their development on the small-series of the 100% electric Audi R8 e-tron super-sports car, which will entry the market in 2012.
